Softball Loses Pair to Trinity

SHREVEPORT, La. - After falling in game one, 5-1, the Ladies scored eight unanswered to take an 8-5 lead, but the Tigers rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh as Centenary (7-6, 1-3 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell in game two to Trinity (9-3, 3-1 SCAC) 11-9 as the Maroon and White lost both games of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon, March 11.

In game two, Trinity scored five unearned in the second to take an early lead. However, the Ladies answered with two in the second and six in the third to take an 8-5 advantage. Junior Wendy Gillet hit her first home run of the season to right center to put the Ladies on the board in the second. With two outs, sophomore Haley Campbell doubled and scored on senior Anna Dunn's RBI single.

In the third, two singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Ladies. Gillet pulled Centenary within one with a two-run double down the left field line. After a strikeout, Campbell came through with a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle. Dunn followed with a two run shot to left field, her third round-tripper of the season, as Centenary took an 8-5 lead after three innings.

The Ladies added a run in the sixth after Trinity pulled within 8-7. Senior Kelsey Ancelot laid down a bunt that spun to stay in fair territory. After a sacrifice and a wild pitch moved her to third, senior Jordan Hughes grounded back to the pitcher. With the throw to first, Ancelot broke for home. The throw beat her to the plate, but she slid around the tag to score as Centenary went up 9-7.

Dunn finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Gillet added two extra-base hits for three RBIs and two runs scored.

However, Trinity used two-out lightning in the seventh to complete the comeback. With two on and one out, Devon Potter doubled to right center to score a run and put the go-ahead run into scoring position. After junior Nichole Aldridge (2-4) got a groundout, Adrienne Edwards went yard for a three-run home run on the first pitch she saw to put the Tigers up 11-9.

Potter managed a hit in all four at-bats with three runs scored and an RBI. Sara McCarty went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

In her first appearance in the circle this season, Sabrina Nieto picked up the win for Trinity, allowing two hits and one run with three strikeouts in the final three innings.

In game one, junior Sydney Hurley put the Ladies on the board in the second with her first home run of the season, but Trinity scored four in the third to take the lead for good.

Junior Amberlee Nix (0-1) took the loss for the Ladies, allowing three runs and five hits in 2.1 innings pitched. Allie Holbrook (5-1) registered the win for the Tigers, allowing six hits and one run in six innings of work.

Centenary returns to action Tuesday, March 13, for a doubleheader at Louisiana College. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
