Softball Loses Doubleheader to Louisiana College

PINEVILLE, La. Senior Anna Dunn started the scoring for the Ladies on the day with a solo home run in the second, but the Wildcats pushed across nine unanswered runs to take game one, 10-2 in six innings. Centenary (7-8) rallied from a 3-0 deficit and pulled within one in game two, but Louisiana College (8-7) added an insurance run in a 4-2 win to complete the doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon, March 13.

After Louisiana College answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the second in game one, an infield hit and a walk put two on with one out. Junior Margeaux Smith then singled to the pitcher, but a throwing error allowed senior Kelsey Ancelot to score to put Centenary in the lead. However, Louisiana College scored one in the bottom of the third to retie the game.

Dunn led the Ladies offensively, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Smith (1-1) took the loss in the circle for Centenary, allowing eight hits and six runs (five earned) in four innings of work.

Tied at two, the Wildcats scored three in the fourth to take the lead for good. Mattie Stine singled and Kourtney Leblanc roped a pinch hit double. Abby Sterling cleared the bases with a home run to left. Louisiana College added a single run in the fifth and four more in the sixth for the 10-2 win.

Chelsea Lewis (3-2) picked up the complete game win for the home team, allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings of work.

In game two, Centenary fell behind by three before a key two-out hit cut the deficit to one. In the third, an error, walk, and a sacrifice bunt put a pair of runners into scoring position with two outs. Junior Sydney Hurley then drove in a pair of runs with a single through the left side.

The Maroon and White threatened to tie the game in the top of the sixth. With two outs, junior Wendy Gillet singled and sophomore Haley Campbell doubled to put a pair in scoring position. However, a ground out ended the threat.

Hurley finished the game 2-for-3, while freshman Taylor Abshire (3-2) took the loss in the circle, allowing 10 hits and four runs in six innings of work.

Already leading 1-0, Louisiana College scored a pair in the second to expand the lead. Sami Walters began the inning with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on Haley Vezinat's infield single. Vezinat stole second to put a pair in scoring position, and a groundout and Kaitlyn Moore's single plated a pair.

After the Ladies cut the deficit to 3-2, Louisiana College added an insurance run in the sixth for the final two-run margin.

Savannah Settle (4-3) picked up the win in the circle, allowing seven hits and two unearned runs in seven innings of work.

Centenary returns to action Saturday, March 17, when it travels to Southwestern. First pitch of the doubleheader in Georgetown, Texas, is set for 1 p.m.
