Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 In Overtime Of 2019 SCAC Championship Semifinals To Southwestern

Georgetown, Texas – The No. 3 seed Centenary women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker, 1-0, in overtime to the No. 2 seed Southwestern Pirates on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2019 SCAC Women's Soccer Championship at Varsity Field.

The Ladies (16-3, 7-3 SCAC) and Southwestern (16-4, 7-2 SCAC) played their second overtime in a matter of seven days following a 2-1 victory by the Pirates this past Sunday in double overtime at Mayo Field in the regular-season finale for both teams. The Pirates earned the No. 2 seed this weekend despite the teams tying for second place by virtue of that 2-1 victory.

Southwestern's Maya Fuller found the net just seconds before the horn was to sound to send the match into a second overtime leaving Centenary in a state of shock. The Pirates took 17 shots to nine for the Ladies and each team took six corner kicks. The hard-fought match featured 17 fouls, four yellow cards, and two red cards. All six cards came in the second half or overtime.

Freshman goalkeeper Karlie Delhommer (St. Amant, La.) played all 100 minutes of the match and recorded four saves while Southwestern keeper Mary Cardone also played the entirety of the match and collected three saves. Twelve players in total from both teams played all 100 minutes of the match.

Centenary advanced to the semifinals for the second time in three seasons and made history with Friday's 1-0 win in the quarterfinals over Schreiner as the Maroon and White set a program record for wins in a season in any era, division 1 or division III. The 1995 and 1996 teams each won 16 games. Centenary has set division III era (2011-present) team records this season for wins (16), goals (47), assists (39), points (132), and shots (327).

The Ladies went 7-2 away from home this season and allowed one goal or less in 14 of 19 matches this season. Centenary has also been being ranked six weeks in a row in the United Soccer Coaches West Regional Poll as it completes one of the most impressive regular seasons in school history.

Senior superstar Migui Boldrin (Ribeiaro, Brazil) was named the 2019 SCAC Offensive Player of the Year after her stellar season for the Maroon and White. Boldrin was also a First Team selection and joined by fellow senior and Shreveport native Kyra Montes. Senior midfielder Betza Bravo (Katy, Texas) was a Second Team selection and freshman midfielder Yosi Bouslog (Friendswood, Texas) earned Honorable Mention honors.

Boldrin led the SCAC in goals (16), shots (97) and points (39) and tied for the league lead in game-winning goals (4). She also had four multiple-goal games – the most in the SCAC. Boldrin also amassed the most shots by a SCAC women's player in a single season since 2014. A two-time SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Week during the regular season, Boldrin ranked second in the SCAC in points per game (2.29) and tied for third in assists (7). In her team's eight regular-season conference matches, she scored a goal or recorded an assist in five of them.

Boldrin became the first player in the current division III era to be named the conference Player of the Year. Montes earned the distinction of being named a First team selection all three seasons for the Ladies, the only player in the division III era of the program to do so. Bravo was named all-conference for the third time in her career after being named to the Honorable Mention squad in 2017 and to the second team last season.

Montes and Boldrin finished the regular season first and second in the SCAC in points, points per game, goals, goals per game, and game-winning goals. Montes led the conference in assists, assists per game, while Boldrin led in shots and shots per game. The dynamic duo combined for an astounding 27 goals, 17 assists, 71 points, and eight game-winning goals this season.

Centenary ranked second in the SCAC during the regular season in both points and goals and second in assists, assists per game, and goals per game. The Ladies also allowed the fourth-fewest goals in the conference and their goals against average was third-best.

Head coach Greg Cathell has now produced 11 All-SCAC players in his three seasons at the helm including five First-Team selections and one Offensive Player of the Year. Cathell is now 25-9 in his last two seasons with 13 SCAC wins.
