Women's Basketball Falls In Season Opener To Hendrix

Shreveport – The Centenary women's basketball team opened its 2019-20 season with a 64-57 loss on Sunday to the Hendrix Warriors in a non-conference game at the Gold Dome.

The Ladies (0-1) were led in scoring by junior guard Alex Williams (Shreveport), a former Loyola College Prep star who was making her Centenary debut after transferring from Bossier Parish Community College.  Freshman guard Destini Powell (Minden, La.) added 10 points in her collegiate debut and junior guard Jennae Mayberry (Clovis, Calif.) scored eight points and had eight rebounds in her debut with the Ladies after transferring from Santa Barbara City College.

Centenary struggled from the field, shooting just 28.3 % for the game (17-60) and missed 16 free throws. The Ladies did force 24 turnovers and held the Warriors to 26.3 % shooting from three-point range. The Ladies also collected 11 steals in the game led by Williams' five. Hendrix had two players score in double figures, led by Anissa Gutierrez's 16. Ali Isbell scored 10 points and Kessie Jenkins added nine points and had 16 rebounds. The Ladies held a slim, 26-25 lead at halftime before Hendrix outscored the Maroon and White, 20-17, in the third quarter and 19-14 in the fourth quarter.

Next up for the Ladies is an exhibition game on Wednesday at Grambling at 7 p.m. Centenary will welcome Millsaps to town on Tuesday, Nov. 19 for a 5:30 p.m. game at the Gold Dome.
