Women's Basketball To Face Schreiner At Home On Friday

Shreveport. – The Centenary women's basketball team returns home to face the Schreiner Mountaineers on Friday in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Gold Dome.

The Ladies (1-17, 1-10 SCAC) lost a heartbreaker, 54-50, last Saturday to the Johnson and Wales Wildcats in Denver in their most recent game. Centenary lost to the Wildcats by four points for the second time this season after dropping a 58-54 decision at home on Dec. 30. Ten of the Ladies' losses this season have been by 14 points or less, with eight by 11 points or less and six by single digits displaying how hard the Ladies have played and how competitive they are.

Schreiner enters Friday's game 8-9 overall and 6-4 in SCAC play. The Mountaineers are winners of three in a row and four of their last five. Friday's game is Schreiner's first on the road since a Jan. 11 victory at Dallas. The Ladies enter Friday's play just a half game behind Dallas in the conference standings and two games back of Southwestern and Johnson and Wales while Schreiner is currently in fifth place.

Ladies' Freshman forward Jazzmyn Jones (Normangee, Texas) led Centenary with a career-high 17 points last Saturday against Johnson and Wales in 29 minutes as she scored in double figures for the second game in a row.  She made 7-11 shots from the field and grabbed nine rebounds Jones scored 13 on Friday in a loss to Colorado College.

Senior forward Deunya Small (Shreveport) scored eight points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds on Saturday after she had 15 rebounds, four points, three blocks, one assist, and one steal in 29 minutes on Friday. Small ranks second in the conference in defensive rebounds as she averages 5.9 per game and ranks fourth overall in rebounds with 7.7 per game. She is also seventh in blocked shots and ranks in the top 15 in assists. The Ladies are one of the top offensive rebounding teams in the conference, averaging 40.6 per game which is third best in the SCAC.

The Ladies played their last two games without leading scorer, junior forward Bre Frierson (Shreveport), who averages 13.5 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game which both rank in the top 10 in the SCAC. Frierson is expected to play on Friday. She has reached double figures 11 times this season and also ranks in the top 10 in the SCAC in field goal percentage, blocked shots, and offensive rebounds.

The Ladies wrap up the weekend with another SCAC game against Trinity on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. Five of Centenary's final seven games will be played at home.
