Volleyball's Marissa Sandoval Sets School Record for Digs

Shreveport, La. - Senior Marissa Sandoval set the Centenary record for digs in a career this past weekend in the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational, hosted by Cal Lutheran. 

Sandoval broke the record in a match Friday versus Whittier with 22 digs, giving her 1,323 digs at the time which eclipsed the previous record of 1,306 set by former teammate Hailey Lawson. She went on to record 52 digs in two matches on Saturday against Linfield and Occidental, helping the Ladies go 1-1 on the final day of the tournament. The San Antonio, Texas native also owns the individual match (36) and season records (518) in the dig category set last season as a junior. She now has 1,375 for her career and already boasts 124 through the first nine matches this season. 

Sandoval, playing as the team's primary libero as a sophomore in 2017, led the team with 3.56 digs per set and Finished the season with 22 double-digit digs matches in 22 matches, including eight straight from a straight set win against Schreiner October 21 to a straight set loss to nationally-ranked Southwestern November 3. She played in all 31 matches as a freshman in 2016 and finished second on the team with 297 digs (3.00 digs per set). She reached double-digit digs 14 times, with a season-high of 21. Sandoval has been named to the Scholar's List for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference three times in her career. 

The Ladies (2-7) went 1-3 over the weekend in a competitive environment at the Gilbert Arena and the Soiland Recreation Center and have played their first nine matches of the season away from home (two tournaments and one true road match). Centenary welcomes St. Thomas to the Gold Dome on Saturday, Sept. 14 for its home opener in a match set for 5 p.m. Live video and live stats for the match will be available.
