Volleyball Splits Pair Of Matches On Final Day Of SCAC Group A Divisional

Irving, Texas – The Centenary volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday on the final day of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Group A Divisional #2 tournament hosted by the University of Dallas at the Maher Center in Irving. 

The Ladies (10-19, 6-8 SCAC) defeated Schreiner, 3-2, and lost to Dallas 3-2 on Saturday. Centenary went 1-3 overall during the weekend, falling by identical scores of 3-0 to Colorado College and Southwestern on Friday. The Maroon and White went 2-2 last month in the previous tournament against the same set of teams, the SCAC Group A Divisional #1 in Shreveport.

Centenary took set one, 25-20 then Schreiner responded by winning set two, 26-24. Schreiner took a 2-1 lead in the match after claiming set three, 25-21, but then the Ladies evened the match by winning set four, 25-22, and closing out the match in the fifth set, 15-8.

Sophomore Rachel Demerjian (Glendora, Calif.) broke the single-game school record for assists, a record which she held, with a whopping 66 in the victory over Schreiner. Demerjian originally set the record with 55 last season in a match against Johnson and Wales. She also added 14 digs in the match.

The Ladies recorded 121 total digs in the match led by senior Marissa Sandoval's (San Antonio, Texas) 47. Junior Ami Powers (Katy, Texas) recorded 29 digs and sophomore Alyssa Davis (Van Alstyne, Texas) and senior Kristian Loving (Tyler, Texas) combined for 24 digs.

Powers added 13 kills, sophomore Kaye Kelley (Fort Worth, Texas) had 13, and Davis had 22. Sophomore Elizabeth Epley (Nashville, Tenn.) had 14 kills.

Centenary fell 3-2 in a hard-fought match to host Dallas in its other match (28-26, 19-25, 25-22, 23-25, 10-15). Demerjian had 51 assists in the losing effort along with 11 digs. Davis and Lowe combined for 33 kills and five Ladies posted double figure digs led by Sandoval's 35.

The Ladies will face Grambling on Tuesday in a non-conference road match set for 6 p.m. #CTheOpportunity #GoCentenary.
