Volleyball Drops Weekend match at St. Thomas

Houston, Texas – The Centenary volleyball team fell in four sets, 3-1, to the St. Thomas Celts on Saturday at the Jerabeck Center.

The Ladies fell to 5-12 overall and 3-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. St. Thomas improved to 4-8 and 2-4 SCAC in their home opener. The two teams split the season series as the ladies defeated the Celts back on Sept. 14 in a five-set thriller at home.

The Celts took the first set, 26-24, and then the ladies evened the match with a 28-26 victory in set two. St. Thomas took set three, 25-19, and clinched the match with a 25-20 win in set four.

Senior Marissa Sandoval (San Antonio, Texas) led the Ladies with 33 digs while sophomore Alyssa Davis (Van Alstyne, Texas) contributed 27. Sophomore Rachel Demerjian (Glendora, Calif.) added 19 digs while Kristian Loving (Tyler Texas) had 17 and junior Ami Powers (Katy, Texas) had 12. Powers added 11 kills and Davis and sophomore Kaye Kelley (Fort Worth, Texas) added 12. The Ladies posted 59 kills to 55 for the Celts.

The Ladies will be back in the friendly confines of the Gold Dome this week for a pair of non-conference matches. Centenary faces Jarvis Christian on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. and then meets Grambling on Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. The Maroon and White are 3-3 at home this season.
