Men?s Basketball Falls to Division I Opponent in Gardner Webb in Exhibition Contest

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team fell to Division I Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon in the Paul Porter Arena, 78-63, in an exhibition contest.

Trevon Shaw and Darius Moose led the Tornados scorers recording 19 and 17 points, respectively, while each grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Moose also had four assists while seven of Shaw's eight rebounds came on the defensive side. Shaw knocked down 7-of-12 shots from the field, 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, while Moose went 8-for-13 from the field.

Phil Wallace had nine points on 2-of-7 shooting while going 4-5 from the free-throw line and grabbing two rebounds. Jaylon Debardlabon had seven boards and two points but also had three steals.

Brevard shot 41.4% from the field on the game, shooting 12-for-29 in both the first and second halves and shot 62.5% from the free-throw line on 10-of-16 shooting.

Jerome Hill led the hosts with 32 points on 13-of-18 from the field, while also grabbing eight rebounds. Tyrell Nelson had 12 points while Adonis Burbage had 10. Nelson also grabbed five boards and Burbage had four. Tyler Strange dished out a team best 12 assists, while also having three rebounds and three steals.

Brevard had a 37-35 edge in rebounds, including a 15-11 advantage on the offensive boards while also having a 15-14 margin in second chance points. Gardner-Webb took advantage in the first half with nine points off turnovers compared to two for the Tornados but each team had seven in the second frame.

In the opening frame, The Tornados had a their first and only lead on a three-pointer by Wallace before the hosts took the lead in the early stages and never looked back, never leading by less than eight in the final 12:05 for a 42-31 halftime lead.

The second half never faired any better for the Tornados as they were down by as many as 20 and never came within more than eight points.

The Tornados return to regular season action on Tuesday, December 3 as the team takes on Anderson as part of a double-header. The women's teams tip off at 6 p.m. while the men begin at 8 p.m.
