Sapp garners career-high; Gents win in OT

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A James Sapp career-high scoring effort and an extra five minutes helped guide the Centenary men's basketball team to its fourth straight win as the Gents (9-8, 5-2 SCAC) toppled Trinity University on Friday evening.

The win is the second in the series over TU and the first on the Tigers' home floor.

Sapp scored a career-high 33 points and recorded a team-best 13 rebounds en route to his fourth double-double of the season. The Shongaloo, La., native has tallied double digit points in 14 contests this season.

Brandon Campbell and Caden Cheramie each joined the sophomore in double figures. Campbell garnered 14 points while Cheramie posted 10 points in the victory. The double digit efforts marked the seventh of the season for both players.

After trailing 45-29 at the half, Centenary rallied back with 41 points in the second stanza while holding the homestanding Tigers to 25 points, but a tip-in by TU as time expired in regulated sent the affair to overtime.

The two squads exchanged buckets to open the extra session, but with 2:24 left, Sapp sparked a 7-0 run by the Maroon and White to close out the contest. Sapp totaled four of the final seven points while Campbell supplied the remaining three points.

Centenary finished the night shooting 39.7 percent from the field and was 21.4 percent from behind the arc. The Gents connected on just shy of 70 percent from the charity stripe.

A.J. Pilliam led Trinity with 14 points while Brian Blum added 12 points. Nik Oakes guided the squad on the glass with seven rebounds.

Centenary returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 24 as it travels to Schreiner University. Tip is slated for 6 p.m.
