@GentsBasketball completes SCAC road sweep

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Centenary men's basketball team claimed its fifth straight win with a 62-58 decision over Schreiner University on Saturday evening. The victory moved the Gents to 10-8 and 6-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The outcome marks the fifth straight in the series with the Mountaineers.

"Schreiner is a tough team and we knew we would have to come out mentally prepared to play. The second day of these back-to-back weekend games usually comes down to who wants it more," said head coach Adam Walsh. "This was a big weekend for the program. We got our first even road win at Trinity and then anytime you complete a road sweep, you have to be happy with the overall weekend. We still have plenty of things to work on, consistency being one for sure, as we begin the second half of conference play."

James Sapp posted his fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds in the winning effort. The Shongaloo, La., native has scored in double figures 15 times this season.

Kendall Demouchet led the Maroon and White with 14 points while Travion Kirkendoll added 11 points. The scoring efforts are the 11th of the season for each. Saro Ntagha added a season-high 9 points.

"Our guys got settled in after 12 first half turnovers and were able to fight through," Walsh said. "Saro had a very productive 10 minutes going 4-for-4 and making his one free throw in a run in the second half."

In a contest that featured 11 ties and 10 lead changes, a Kirkendoll 3-pointer with 3:03 remaining broke a 55-all deadlock and gave the Gents the lead for good as it sparked a 7-3 spurt to clinch the contest.

Centenary shot 52.3 percent from the field en route to the win. The clip was the second highest of the season and sits just behind the 58.5 percentage shot against Rust College earlier this season. The Maroon and White were 35.4 percent from behind the arc and 70.6 percent from the free-throw line.

The Gents held a 37-25 rebounding advantage in the contest marking the fourth straight. The 12-rebound difference is the highest of the season.

Stevan Guerrero guided Schreiner's effort with 13 points. Wes Miller added 11 points. The Mountaineers shot 43.6 percent from the floor and were 42.9 percent from the charity stripe.

Centenary returns to action on Friday, Jan. 30 as it hosts Trinity University. Tip is slated for 8 p.m.
