Tornados hold on for 63-60 win over Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Brevard College Tornados avenged a disappointing loss from January 14 by defeating the Eagles of Carson-Newman, 63-60, on Wednesday night during South Atlantic Conference (SAC) action in the Holt Fieldhouse.

It was the first win over the Eagles (12-11, 10-7 SAC) since a 73-72 victory during the SAC semifinals back on March 6, 2010, snapping nine-straight victories for Carson-Newman, and the first win in Jefferson City since February 10, 2010.

The Tornados (10-13, 8-9 SAC) also had the second most steals in a game during the NCAA era at Brevard with 14, as Miles Leathers finished with a career-high six takeaways and 11 rebounds. He also had 11 points. Trevon Shaw led Brevard with 14 points while Darius Moose finished with 12 points and three assists. Phil Wallace and Alex Moe each had 10 points while Moe had three steals and five boards.

Charles Clark led all scorers with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Carson Brooks and Sawyer Williams with nine and eight points, respectively. Brooks also had five rebounds while Mason bates had six points and six rebounds.

Brevard was down 14-2 early in the contest, making just one bucket over the first 6:56 of the opening half, for just 10 percent shooting. The Tornados stormed back on eight straight points, including two three pointers by Moose and Moe.

Carson-Newman went up 21-14 with 7:50 remaining in the opening frame before Brevard went on a 9-2 run and tied the game at 23 with just under four minutes left in the half. Shaw put the guests up 28-24 a few seconds later before the teams traded baskets over the final moments of the half. Shaw put Brevard up 30-29 going into the break.

The teams went back-and-forth as the game was tied at 33 just three and a half in but Shaw gave Brevard the lead for good, hitting a three point bucket. The Tornados went up by nine to pad their lead along with some stifling defense by Leathers to build a 49-40 lead with 10:35 left.

The teams then went back and forth but Carson-Newman never came within more than seven over the next seven minutes as Brevard led 57-50. Wallace put Brevard back up by 10 with 2:39 remaining before the Eagles pulled within six with 58 seconds left.

With Brevard leading 62-57, Clark knocked down a three pointer with 14 seconds left. Shaw was fouled on the ensuing possession to put Brevard up 63-60. A last second desperation three by Clark missed and the Tornados held on for the win.

The Tornados had 19 points on 21 Eagle turnovers along with 22 bench points. Brevard shot 36.5 percent (23-for-63) from the field but went 12-for-21 from beyond the arc for a 57.1 percent clip.

The Tornados return home on Saturday to host the Cobras of Coker College. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
