Sapp's career-high leads Gents to win over Colorado College

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Centenary men's basketball team evened its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference record as the Gents claimed a 64-52 win over Colorado College on Saturday evening behind a career-high night for James Sapp.

Sapp led the Maroon and White with 24 points en route to the program's first win over Colorado College in program history. The Shongaloo, La., native's point total surpasses his previous best of 21 points, set three times this season with the last coming against the Tigers to previous night.

"It's big to even our record up this early in the season," said head coach Adam Walsh. "And for it to come against Colorado College and be the first against them in school history makes it even better. It was a goal of this team since that first season."

The sophomore has scored in double figures 10 times this season including nine consecutive and has four, 20-plus, point outings on the campaign.

"His ability to score at the rim is really high with his athleticism," Walsh said of Sapp. "He used it tonight and attacked. He found another gear tonight in spurts. He's rounding into form with the last few weeks. This falls right in line with what he's been doing."

Traviion Kirkendoll added 12 points for the Gents in the contest - his seventh double figure, scoring outing and second straight - while Brandon Campbell added 11 points - his fourth this season and third consecutive.

Centenary finished the night shooting 42.6 percent from the field and matched a season-high 42.9 clip from behind the arc set against Hendrix earlier this season. The Gents held the Black and Gold to 39.2 percent from the floor - marking the fourth time this season they've held an opponent under 40 percent.

After the two squads fought to a 15-all deadlock over the first 10 minutes of the opening half, Centenary posted a 12-2 run to reach the first double-digit lead of the contest with 6:22 remaining before intermission. Sapp posted 7 of the 12 points during the run along with 4 from Kendall Demouchet and 1 from Caden Cheramie. Sapp added 4 points over the next minute giving the Maroon and White its largest lead of the contest at 31-17 before heading into the half up 12 points.

Colorado College rallied back in the second half cutting the lead to four points with 10:44 remaining, but an 11-5 answer from the Gents quickly pushed the lead back out to 57-47 setting up the 12-point decision.

Tyler Jonas paced the Tigers with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Chris Lesnansky added 11 points.

Centenary returns to action on Friday, Jan. 9 as its travels to Texas Lutheran. Tip is slated for 8 p.m.
