GEORGETOWN, Texas - Centenary's James Sapp scores a career-high 31 points to lead the Gents basketball team to a 70-65 victory over Southwestern University on Saturday evening. The win moves the Maroon and White to 6-8 on the season and evened at 2-2 in conference play.
The reigning SCAC Player of the Week, who surpassed his previous mark of 24 points set last weekend against Colorado College, has scored in double figures in 11 consecutive outings and 12 total for the season. The Shongaloo, La., native narrowly missed his third double-double of the season as he grabbed a team-best nine rebounds including eight on the defensive end.
Brandon Campbell joined Sapp in double digits with 10 points marking the fifth on the campaign for the sophomore.
In tightly contest affair which saw eight lead changes and eight ties, a pair of Sapp free throws' at the 3:51 mark broke a 62-all deadlock and sparked a 8-3 run to close the contest for the Gents. Sapp scored six of the final eight points of the half.
Centenary finished the night shooting 44.4 percent from the field and was 65.6 percent from the charity stripe in the outing.
Southwestern shot 38.7 percent from the floor becoming the fifth Gents' opponent held under 40 percent shooting this season. The Pirates logged a 38.7 clip from behind the arc in the outing and was 62.5 percent from the free throw line.
Ryan Ogden led the Black and Gold with 19 points off the bench and grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds. Zach Whitlock added 12 points for the Pirates in the loss.
Centenary returns to action on Friday, Jan. 16 as it hosts the University of Dallas. Tip is slated for 8 p.m.
