SHREVEPORT, La. - Centenary men's basketball player Travion Kirkendoll was named to D-III News All-Freshman Team as announced by the publication on Monday afternoon. The list recognizes the top 10 freshmen in the country in Division III.
Kirkendoll finished sixth in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in scoring with 12.6 points per game, the highest of any freshman in the conference, en route to being named SCAC Co-Newcomer of the Year. He was also 20th in rebounds (3.7 rpg), 11th in field goal percentage (43.9), and sixth in steals (1.1 spg). He finished ranked in the top 20 in nine categories in the conference.
The Campti, La., native scored in double figures 20 times this season, including 10 consecutive to finish his first season. Kirkendoll scored a career-high 22 points on Dec. 10 against the University of Texas at Dallas and tied the feat on Feb. 6 at the University of Dallas.
Teammate James Sapp was tabbed as an all-American honorable mention by the publication.
Sapp, the SCAC Player of the Year, D3hoops.com All-South Region Team and NABC All-South District Team selection, averaged a conference-leading 16.3 points per game. He also grabbed 8.0 rebounds per game, which ranked second, and shot 52.1 percent from the floor, which was fourth in the conference. He scored in double figures in 23 contests with 20-plus in eight outings, including a career-high 33 at Trinity on Jan. 23. He also posted seven double-doubles; with a season-high 15 rebounds against Austin College in a 72-68 win. He also earned SCAC Player of the Week honors five times this season.
The accolades come after leading the Gents to a share of the SCAC regular season title and a runner-up finish in the conference tournament. The regular-season title marks the first since the 1989-90 season in the former Trans-Atlantic Athletic Conference (NCAA Division I).
Centenary finished the season with a 17-10 record, 11-3 in conference.
