Sapp named to NABC All-South District Team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Centenary men's basketball standout James Sapp has added new hardware this postseason as he was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-South District First Team, as announced by the association on Thursday. The NABC recognizes the best men's collegiate basketball student-athletes and coaches in the division and is selected by member coaches of the NABC in NCAA Division III.

The Shongaloo, La., native, who was tabbed to the D3hoops.com All-South Region Team earlier this week, is the lone Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference representative on the 11-member south squad.

Sapp, the SCAC Player of the Year, concluded the 2014-15 campaign averaging a conference-leading 16.3 points per game. He also grabbed 8.0 rebounds per game, which ranked second and shot 52.1 percent from the floor, which was fourth in the conference.

The sophomore scored in double figures in 23 contests with 20 or more in eight outings, including a career-high 33 at Trinity on Jan. 23. He also posted seven double-doubles; with a season-high 15 rebounds against Austin College in a 72-68 win. He tallied 24 points in the outing against the Roos.

Sapp earned SCAC Player of the Week honors five times this season, the most by a player in a single season since the 1998-99 campaign when Bryan Egli of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won it six times. The benchmark of player of the week laurels surpasses the program single-season record of four by Jonathan Blount set last season.

The accolade comes after leading the Gents to a share of the SCAC regular season title and a runner-up finish in the conference tournament. The regular-season title marks the first since the 1989-90 season in the former Trans-Atlantic Athletic Conference (NCAA Division I).

Centenary finished the season with a 17-10 record, 11-3 in conference.
