SHREVEPORT, La. - The Centenary men's basketball team continued its pursuit of the top seed in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship with a 66-65 win over Texas Lutheran University. The victory avenges a 75-70 loss to the Bulldogs earlier this season.
James Sapp led the Gents with 18 points and pulled down a team-best 7 rebounds. Travion Kirkendoll added 16 points while Kendall Demouchet poured in 10 points en route to the win.
Centenary, which never trailed in the outing, held off a late surge by the Bulldogs who tied the contest at 65-all on a 3-pointer by Jordan Kouremetis with seconds remaining in the game. The Maroon and White, however, broke the deadlock as Demouchet knocked down the front end of a pair of free-throws to regain the lead at 66-65 with one tick remaining.
The Gents connected on 44.2 percent from the field, including a clip of 50 from behind the arc en route to the win.
Sterling Holmes led the Black and Gold with 18 points while Kouremetis added 15 points. Donte McGee pulled down 9 rebounds.
TLU finished the night shooting 40.4 percent from the floor, but was held to 27.8 percent from behind the arc.
Centenary returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 15 as it hosts Southwestern University. Tip is slated for 2 p.m.
