SHREVEPORT, La. – After falling to Concordia on Friday, Centenary Tennis finished the weekend with a sweep of Louisiana College. The Ladies (2-7) picked up a big 8-1 decision over the Wildcats, while the Gents (1-7) upended Louisiana College 6-3.
The Ladies swept doubles and took 5-of-6 singles matches for the dominating win. Senior Grace Doucet and freshman Alyssa Davis cruised to an 8-1 win at first doubles. Senior Shyann Pisano and freshman Brianna Serret at second and freshmen Laerke Solnaes and London Todd at third doubles won 8-2.
"The Ladies were all business and played confident and composed tennis – dominating the doubles courts and staying focused to quickly finish off the match in singles," said head coach Matt Coomer. "Alyssa Davis was our standout player, securing two points and posting an impressive, hard-earned win in her debut at first singles."
Davis won at first singles 6-4, 6-0, while Doucet did not allow a game at second singles in a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Serret took a tight first set, 7-6, before dominating her way to a 6-1 in the second set at third singles. Solenaes won 6-4, 6-1 at fifth singles before freshman Camille Pillard took sixth singles 6-4, 6-3.
Meanwhile, the Gents avenged a loss earlier in the season to the Wildcats. After losing a tight match at first doubles, the Gents rebounded for dominating 8-2 wins at second (sophomore Kevin Le and freshman Pius Lau) and third doubles (freshmen Divine Martin and Tobias Thorkelson).
Holding on to a slim 2-1 lead after doubles, the Gents took four singles match to cap the win. Junior Max Wamsley took a 6-1, 6-3 win at second singles, while Lim did not drop a game at third singles. Freshman Miguel Vazquez won 6-2, 6-0 at fifth singles. However, the match of the day came from Martin, who rallied from a set down to win 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5).
"Our strong start was the key to our victory," said Coomer. "It really helped our confidence level going into singles against a team we had lost to earlier this season. Divine Martin was our standout player, securing two points and clinching the match with his singles win."
Centenary tennis returns to action this weekend with a neutral site match against Oklahoma Baptist Saturday, March 30, before a home match against Ozarks Sunday morning, March 31.
