Scoggin Picks up Pair of Wins in Circle as Ladies Softball Takes Doubleheader at Trinity

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Ladies led the entire first game and won 5-1, but rallied in game two after trailing the Tigers for an 8-3 win as Centenary (15-19, 12-8 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) swept a doubleheader to take the series from Trinity (14-20, 8-11 SCAC) Saturday afternoon, April 14.

Trailing 3-1 in the fifth of game two, Centenary scored four unearned runs to regain the lead for good. With two outs and no one on base, senior Cassie Gonzales reached on an error. Junior Haley Campbell singled and Gonzales advanced to third. Campbell stole second and senior Wendy Gillet tied the game with a two-RBI single. Senior Sydney Hurley followed with a two-run home run to left center, a blast that has yet to land, to put the Ladies up 5-3. It was Hurley's team-leading third home run of the season.

The Ladies capped the game with three insurance runs in the sixth. With two outs and a pair of runners in scoring position, Gonzales reached on an error that scored a run. Gonzales then went to stole second, but a run scored and Gonzales moved up to third on a wild pitch. Gonzales scored on Campbell's RBI single.

Campbell, Hurley, Gillet, and senior Margeaux Smith all finished with a pair of hits with Hurley adding three RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Hannah Scoggin (7-3) allowed only a hit in three innings of relief for the win.

Centenary scored in the top of the first when Hurley hit a two-out, RBI double.

Trinity scored a pair in the third to take the lead. With one out, Emily Barefield singled. Brianna Pena singled Barefield to third, but the throw to third allowed Pena to advance to second. Marisa Trevino tied the game on an RBI groundout before a Gina Monaco single put the Tigers in the lead.

Trinity took a 3-1 lead with a bases loaded walk in the fourth, but senior Nichole Aldridge came in and got a lineout and foul out to end the threat. After Centenary retook the lead in the fifth, Trinity put the first two on base in the fifth. However, Scoggin came in and recorded a strikeout, fly out, and ground out in keeping the Trinity runners at first and second.

Monaco led Trinity with two hits, while Alyssa Jolliffe (1-2) took the loss, allowing five hits and five runs (one earned) in six innings of work.

In game one, Centenary scored two runs in the top of the first and never looked back in a 5-1 win. In the top of the first with one out, Gonzales walked, stole second, and scored on Gillet's RBI hit. Hurley followed with an RBI double.

Trinity scored an unearned run in the bottom of the inning, but Scoggin's held the Tigers scoreless for the final six innings for the complete-game win.

Centenary scored three insurance runs in the sixth. With one out and a runner at first, sophomore Erin Lewis laid down a sacrifice bunt. However, a fielding error allowed both runners to be safe. Smith followed with a single to load the bases before a Campbell sacrifice fly put the Ladies up two. Sophomore Becca McGough then reached on an error that scored two more runs for the final four-run margin.

Gillet led Centenary with two hits and a run and RBI. Scoggin picked up the complete-game win, allowing an unearned run and seven hits.

The Ladies conclude the 2019 regular season next weekend when they host Texas Lutheran Thursday and Friday, April 18-19. Centenary will celebrate the 10-member senior class following the doubleheader on Friday.
