Seven Named to All-Conference Squad, Two Named All-Tournament, for Ladies Softball

SHREVEPORT, La. – In a vote held by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Coaches and released at the Conference Tournament Friday night, April 26, seven Centenary Softball players received All-Conference accolades.

Leading the way with First Team honors as a catcher is senior Sydney Hurley. Senior Wendy Gillet at first base and junior Haley Campbell as a utility player garnered Second Team All-Conference honors, while seniors Cassie Gonzales, Amberlee Nix, and Margeaux Smith with freshman Hannah Scoggin earned Honorable Mention recognition.

Hurley finishes her two-year Ladies Softball career as a two-time All-Conference performer, having received Second Team honors last season.

"Sydney has made the most of her two years at Centenary," explained head coach Mark Suire. "As a JUCO transfer last year, she was able to provide leadership and experience behind the plate. This season, she's caught the vast majority of innings we've played despite constantly battling injury."

"It's great that she has been recognized as the top catcher in the conference," added Suire.

Hurley has been a solid defensive presence behind the plate for the Ladies, ranking second in the SCAC by throwing out .238 percent of would-be base stealers. She is also second in the conference with 10 runners caught stealing.

Hurley leads the team with four home runs for the season – none bigger than the round tripper in the SCAC Tournament to tie the game in the sixth inning April 26 against #22 Southwestern. She also ranks second on the team in RBI (26) and doubles (eight).

Hurley also made the All-Tournament squad, finishing the five-game weekend with four hits and seven RBI.

Gillet completes her Centenary career as a four-time All-Conference performer, having been named to the Second Team in 2016 and Honorable Mention in 2017 and 2018. She leads the team in many offensive categories, including average (.372), slugging percentage (.537), hits (45), RBI (31), and doubles (15). She also ranks second in runs (20). Gillet sits second in doubles and third in RBI among conference players.

Campbell rounds out the Second Team honorees for Centenary. Campbell is batting .282 for the year with 29 hits, 15 runs, and 17 RBI. She currently has 13 stolen bases, joining Smith and Gonzales as the only Ladies with double-digit steals for the season.

Scoggin and Nix were named Honorable Mention after great seasons in the circle for the Ladies. Scoggin leads the team and ranks fifth in the conference with nine wins. She finished the season 9-5 with a save and six complete games. Nix holds a 6-11 record and a save with five complete games and 31 strikeouts.

In her third and final season, Smith earned Honorable Mention accolades for the second straight year. Smith batted .308 and led the team in runs scored (22) and stolen bases (15). Gonzales finished second on the team with 38 hits and 20 runs scored.

Gonzales joined Hurley on the All-Conference Tournament team, batting .313 with five hits, three runs scored, a triple, and four stolen bases.

Centenary went 3-2 in the SCAC Tournament, finishing third for the third time in four seasons.
