Gents Swimming Finishes Fourth, Ladies Fifth at Hendrix Classic

CONWAY, Ark. – The Ladies won the 400 medley relay while freshman Miguel Vasquez took the 200-yard backstroke for the Gents to Lead Centenary Swimming at the 51st annual Hendrix Classic Saturday afternoon, November 3.

The Gents finished fourth of seven teams with 211 points, while the Ladies took fifth with 197 points. NCAA Division II Henderson State took both the men's and women's team title.

Freshman Brianna Serret entered the Centenary record book in only her third collegiate competition. She finished second in the 200 backstroke – first among NCAA Division III athletes – with a time of 2:14.64, the ninth-fastest time in program history. The time is also the third-best time in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference this season and a nearly three second improvement from the first time Serret swam the event this season.

Serret also teamed up with junior Jessi Jordan and freshmen Kaylin Swoboda and Lindsay Strohm to win the 400 medley relay by three seconds, finishing with a time of 4:16.52.

Leading the Gents was Vasquez, who won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.52 – the third-fastest time in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference this season.

Swoboda finished second overall, and tops among NCAA Division III swimmers, with a 2:23.42 mark in the 200 IM. In the 500 freestyle, Strohm and freshman Sarah Harrison finished 1-2 among Division III athletes (and fourth and sixth overall, respectively) with times of 5:40.60 and 5:49.70. Jordan took second overall and first among NCAA Division III athletes with a time of 2:37.41 in the 200 breaststroke.

In the 400 freestyle relay, the Gents quartet of senior Blake Smith, junior Eddie Dyess, freshman Mitchell Lulich, and Vasquez took third overall and tops among NCAA Division III teams with a time of 3:23.30.

The Ladies and Gents Swimming teams return to action next Saturday, November 10, when it takes on Southwestern for Homecoming. First event is scheduled for 11 a.m.
