Ladies Basketball Introduces Three Freshmen for 2018-19

SHREVEPORT, La. – Centenary Ladies basketball, under the direction of first year head coach Jason Schmitz, announces the addition of three freshmen for the 2018-19 season.

Ladies Basketball adds Elizabeth Matthews, Priya Ponia, and Haley Smith, as well as sophomore Na'Lani Zeno.

Here is a closer look at the three incoming freshmen for the season:

 

20 Elizabeth Matthews

Fr. / Guard / 5-6

Katy, Texas / The Village School

 

Matthews played point guard and forward for head coach Doug Brotherton at The Village School. She earned All-District accolades all four years for the Vikings, being named to the First Team twice and the Second Team twice. Academically, Matthews earned Academic All-State recognition twice, was inducted into the National and Spanish National Honors Society, and the Quill and Scroll and the A-B Honor Roll.

Elizabeth is the daughter of Cynthia Thompson and Ryan Matthews and has two siblings, Tiara and Christopher Matthews. At Centenary, she is majoring in biochemistry.

1 Priya Ponia

Fr. / Guard / 5-4

Friendswood, Texas / Friendswood HS

 

Ponia played both point guard and shooting guard for head coach Daron Scott and Kevin Reed at Friendswood HS. Ponia received All-Tournament honors in 2017. In 2018, she was recognized Second Team All-District, Team MVP, and the Lady Mustang Award. Academically, she received Academic All-District in 2017 and 2018 and Academic All-State in 2018.

The daughter of Don-Yae and Anuj Ponia, Priya has one brother, Anil. At Centenary, she is majoring in biology.

24 Haley Smith

Fr. / Guard / 5-8

Venus, Texas / Venus HS

 

Smith played shooting guard for head coach Josh Smith at Venus High School. For her sophomore-senior seasons for the Bulldogs, she received Second Team All-District honors.

The daughter of Leigha and Rodney Smith, she had four siblings: Amber, Kenzie, and Josh Smith and Ricky Handy. At Centenary, she is majoring in psychology.

 

The Ladies Basketball Team kicks off the 2018-19 slate when it hosts Hardin-Simmons for Homecoming. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m.
