PINEVILLE, La. – Ladies Softball committed six errors and allowed seven unearned runs on the day as Centenary (0-3) was swept in a doubleheader by Millsaps (3-5). The Majors took game one 12-6 before a 9-1 victory in game two.
Trailing 6-1 in game one, the Ladies scored two runs to pull within three. Sophomore Erin Lewis was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning. After a fielder's choice, freshman Nicole Gauntt walked to put a pair of Ladies on base. Freshman Teri Johnson and junior Haley Campbell hit RBI singles, but a double play ended the inning.
Later down 9-3, Centenary scored three in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Kelcie Bourgeois walked and advanced to second on Johnson's bunt single. Campbell followed with another RBI single, but both runners moved into scoring position on the throw home. A wild pitch and the ensuing throwing error by the catcher cleared the bases.
Johnson and Campbell both finished the game 2-for-5 with a run scored each, but Campbell drove in a pair and Johnson one. Senior Amberlee Nix allowed nine runs (two earned) on 11 hits in the circle for the loss.
For Millsaps in the top of the first, the leadoff hitter reached on an error. Two outs and a single later, Jordan Lipari doubled in a pair of unearned runs. The Majors added three unearned runs in the third and never led by less than three the rest of the game.
Lipari finished the game 3-for-5 with five RBIs. Cassidy Thrash (1-0) picked up the win in relief, allowing one hit and two runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
In game two, the lone run for the Ladies came on a solo home run by senior Wendy Gillet.
Millsaps scored three unearned runs in the first to take the lead for good. Leslie Norris singled to leadoff the game and moved to third when the next batter reached on a muffed throw. Karlie Galloway hit into a fielder's choice, but a throwing error to home scored Norris. Lindsay Osbon grounded out to score another run before Lipari hit a sacrifice fly.
The Majors added five in the fourth and one in the seventh for the final 8-run margin.
Norris went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Amber Funderbunk (1-1) picked up the complete game win.
Nichole Aldridge (0-2) took the loss, allowing six hits and eight runs (five earned) in 3.1 innings of work.
Centenary returns to action next Saturday, February 16, for a doubleheader at Texas A&M Texarkana. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
