Ladies Softball Drops Pair of Heartbreakers to Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas – After the Ladies dropped a tough decision in game one, 1-0, the Mountaineers rallied in game two for a 3-1 win as Centenary (12-18, 9-7 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) lost a pair to Schreiner (15-27, 11-5 SCAC) Saturday afternoon, April 6.

In the third inning of game two with one out, freshman Teri Johnson and junior Kaitlyn Price singled. Senior Cassie Gonzales singled in Johnson to open up the scoring in the game. However, Courtney Bigly put the home team in the lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. Schreiner added an insurance run in the sixth for the final two-run win.

Senior Mackenzie Stewart (0-1) took the loss, allowing a hit and two runs in an inning in relief. Hallie Schmitt (1-3) picked up the win for Schreiner, allowing five hits and a run for the complete-game win.

In game one, Centenary put a runner at second twice but could not score. With one out in the first, singles by Price and sophomore Erin Lewis put two on base, but two strikeouts ended the threat. In the third with two outs, Price singled and stole second. However, a popup ended the inning.

Price finished with two of Centenary's four hits, while senior Nichole Aldridge (3-5) took the complete game loss, allowing three hits and an unearned run.

In the bottom of the fourth, Schreiner scored an unearned run. Bigley singled, was sacrificed to second, and moved to third on an error. Ashton Vasquez added a sacrifice fly to center field for the lone Mountaineers run.

Hannah Ortiz (4-5) picked up the complete-game win, allowing four hits in seven shutout innings with five strikeouts.

Centenary takes to the road April 12-13 against Trinity for its final away contests of the regular season. First pitch of the first doubleheader next Friday in San Antonio is set for 5 p.m.
