SAN ANTONIO – After falling 6-0 in game one and trailing 1-0 in the second, the Ladies scored one in the fourth and two in the seventh as Centenary (13-19, 10-8 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) took game two, 3-1, to split a doubleheader at Trinity (14-18, 8-9 SCAC) Friday night, April 12.
In game two down 1-0 in the fourth, a Trinity error moved the tying run into scoring position with no outs. The Tigers recorded a pair of outs, but a two-out single by sophomore Becca McGough tied the game.
With the game tied with one out in the seventh, senior Cassie Gonzales singled an advanced to third on classmate Wendy Gillet's double. Senior Sydney Hurley added a sacrifice fly and Gillet moved to third when the Tigers threw home in an attempt to get Gonzales. Junior Haley Campbell followed with an RBI single to drive in an insurance run.
Trinity was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh as Centenary finished off the win.
Gillet finished the game with three hits in as many at-bats and a run scored. Senior Amberlee Nix (5-9) picked up the win, allowing six hits and one run in 6.1 innings of work. Freshman Hannah Scoggin recorded the final two outs of the game for her first collegiate save of her collegiate career.
Trinity scored its lone run in the second. With two outs and no one on base, Gina Monaco was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on Emily Reed's single.
Cat Patterson (3-8) took the loss, allowing eight hits and three runs (two earned) in 6.1 innings of work.
In game two, Centenary recorded seven hits – two each by freshman Teri Johnson, Gonzales, and Hurley – but could not score.
After Trinity took the lead with a run in the third, the Tigers blew the game open with three in the fourth. With one on base with two outs, Monaco singled. Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Rylie Goldwait walked, but another wild pitch put runners on the corners and scored another runs as Trinity took a 2-0 lead. A double steal led to another run, and an error put Trinity up 4-0.
Goldwait led Trinity with a pair of hits in as many at-bats with three runs scored. Allie Holbrook (9-8) allowed seven hits in the complete-game shutout. Senior Nichole Aldridge (3-6) picked up the complete-game loss, allowing eight hits and six runs (one earned).
Centenary concludes the weekend Saturday afternoon, April 13, with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
