CONWAY, Ark. – The Ladies volleyball team closed out the four-match weekend at the 2018 Warriors Classic Saturday (September 8), knocking off Central Baptist (2-9) in the morning match in four sets, 25-20, 16-25, 25-15, 25-17. However, Centenary (3-6) lost the afternoon match against host Hendrix (7-1), 25-14, 25-22, 25-19.

In set one against the Mustangs, Centenary started up 6-1. Senior Makenzie Shaw and freshman Alyssa Davis both started the match with kills for the Ladies. After both team sided out, senior Amanda Farr and Shaw tallied a kill before an assisted block by Shaw and senior Shannon Orlopp.

Centenary led set one by as much as nine, but Central Baptist cut the deficit to 23-20. However, an Orlopp kill and an ace by junior Marissa Sandoval ended the first frame.

After the Ladies dropped set two, they fell behind 13-6 in set three. However, seven unanswered tied the set. A service error put Centenary on serve, and an Orlopp ace, a freshman Lauren Kelley kill, and two errors by the Mustangs cut the deficit to two. Kills by Kelley and senior Michaela Brantley tied the set. Central Baptist sided out to go up 14-13, but 11 unanswered put Centenary on set point. A Brantley kill tied the match and put freshman Rachel Demerjian on serve. Three Mustangs errors, three kills by freshman Elizabeth Epley and two from Brantley, a Demerjian ace, and a block by Brantley and Epley put Centenary on set point. After a Mustangs point, a Kelley kill ended the set.

The Ladies never looked back after beginning the fourth set up 9-2. An error and a Demerjian ace gave Centenary the 2-0 lead. After both teams traded points, another Central Baptist error and a Brantley kill pushed the lead to 5-1. Both teams traded points before an Epley kill and two successful attacks by senior Shyann Pisano gave Centenary the 9-2 lead.

Epley led Centenary with 10 kills and no errors on 27 attempts (.370), while Demerjian added 26 assists and 11 digs.

Leading Central Baptist was Kelsy Knox with 10 kills and 18 digs.

The final match of the weekend went to the Warriors in straight sets. In the match, Kelley hit eight kills while Demerjian recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 20 assists and 11 digs.

Leading the Warriors was Maddie Tovar and Kiersten Huitt with nine kills each.

Centenary returns to action Wednesday, September 12, when it hosts Grambling State for its 2018 home opener. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
