Ladies Softball Drops Pair of Games at Louisiana College

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies Softball team scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, but the Wildcats scored 10-of-11 runs the rest of the way in game one and held on for a 2-1 win in game two as Centenary (3-10) dropped a doubleheader at Louisiana College (12-5) Tuesday afternoon, March 12.

The Ladies scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first in game one to take a quick lead. Freshman Teri Johnson reached on an error and advanced to second on a junior Kaitlyn Price's single. After a double steal, an RBI groundout by senior Margeaux Smith produced the first run. Classmate Wendy Gillet followed with a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth, senior Sydney Hurley doubled, was sacrificed to third, and scored on Price's single.

Price and Hurley both went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Price added an RBI. Freshman Hannah Scoggin (2-2) took the loss, allowing 11 hits and 10 runs (six earned) in 4.1 innings of work.

Meanwhile, Louisiana College tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the first and took the lead with a run in the third, but three runs in the bottom of the fourth opened up a four-run lead for the home team. With one out, Sami Walters singled and advanced to third when Samantha Cetta reached on an error. After Kourtney LeBlanc hit an RBI single, Shelby Burgeron followed with a bunt single. However, a throwing error plated another Wildcat's run. Briley Johnston drove in the third run on an RBI groundout.

Begeron led Louisiana College from the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Cameron Crochet (2-3) picked up the win, allowing six hits and three runs (one earned) in five innings of work.

In game two, Centenary outhit Louisiana College 8-4, but three Ladies' errors led to a pair of unearned runs for the Wildcats.

With the Ladies down 2-0 in the fifth with one out, Hurley singled and advanced to second on a groundout. However, a throwing error scored Hurley to cut the deficit in half. In the seventh, singles by senior Cassie Gonzales and junior Haley Campbell put runners on the corners. However, a key double play ended the ballgame.

Senior Payton LeBlanc and sophomore Becca McGough both led Centenary with a pair of hits. Senior Amberlee Nix (0-5) picked up the complete game loss, allowing four hits and two unearned runs.

Louisiana College scored a single run in each of the first and second. In the first, Briley Johnston reached on a one-out error, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on Abby Sterling's two-out single. In the second, Sami Walters reached on a one error, stole second, advanced to third on a single, and scored on a double steal.

Madison Dykes (1-1) picked up the complete-game win, allowing eight hits and an unearned run.

Centenary returns to action this weekend for its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener against Austin College. The doubleheader on Saturday, March 16 is set to begin at 1 p.m.
