Home Sweet Home! Ladies Volleyball Back in Win Column after Dispatching LeTourneau

SHREVEPORT, La. – After splitting the first two sets, the Ladies held the YellowJackets to .000 hitting percentage in the third and recorded 15 kills in the fourth as Centenary (8-11) knocked off LeTourneau (6-10) 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 25-21 in the Gold Dome Friday night, September 28.

Centenary got off to a fast start thanks to 17 kills in the first set alone. Tied at nine, Freshman Lauren Kelley tallied three straight kills and classmate Elizabeth Epley added a pair of aces. LeTourneau tied the set at 14 with five straight points of its own, including three kills from Kianna Crow.

Centenary later had a 23-22 and took the set thanks to kills from Kelley and freshman Alyssa Davis.

Davis finished with a match high 19 kills, the most kills per set (4.75) in a match for her collegiate career. Kelley also finished with 13 successful attacks and reached double-digit kills for the third straight match.

LeTourneau took the second set and led 3-1 in the third, but seven unanswered by the Ladies gave Centenary the lead for good. A senior Makenzie Shaw kill and a pair of aces by Marissa Sandoval put the Ladies ahead. A Davis kill, a double on LeTourneau, and another Sandoval ace forced a LeTourneau timeout. The YellowJackets hit an error out of the timeout as Centenary went up five. Centenary never led by less than four the rest of the set.

Later up 20-15, the Ladies scored four straight to go on set point. A LeTourneau hitting error and two solo blocks by Epley gave Centenary 23. Kelley added a kill to bring set point. LeTourneau saved set point twice, but a YellowJacket service error ended the set.

The visitors took a 15-13 lead in set four, but five unanswered gave Centenary the advantage. A service error and two Davis kills forced a LeTourneau timeout. Davis came out of the break with another kill and a LeTourneau hitting error put Centenary up three.

Letourneau pulled within 23-21, but a Kelley kill and a solo block from senior Michaela Brantley ended the match.

For the second straight match, sophomore Brittany Risner recorded a career high in assists. She finished with 42 assists and 17 digs for her first collegiate double-double.

For the match, Centenary finished with a season best 91 digs, led by Sandoval's 19. Senior Hailey Lawson contributed 18 while junior Kristian Loving added 12.

With Centenary up 16-15 in set two, LeTourneau scored five straight, A Lexie Welton kill tied the match and two straight hitting errors put the YellowJackets up two. A pair of aces by Audrey Galindo ended the run. LeTourneau won the set by three.

Crow led the visitors with 18 kills while Cam Taylor recorded a double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs. Liz Williams added 29 digs.

Centenary returns to action next Wednesday at 6 p.m. when it hosts Jarvis Christian. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
