Gents Swimming Second, Ladies Third at Austin College Invite

SHERMAN, Texas – In the first competition in 2019, freshman Brianna Serret swept the backstroke events, while classmate Miguel Vasquez claimed a win in the 100 backstroke at the 2019 Austin College Invitational Saturday afternoon, January 5.

The Gents finished the invite with 373 points, taking runner-up honors behind Oklahoma Christian. Centenary finished ahead of fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference members Austin College and McMurry. The Ladies took third with 369 points, finishing behind Oklahoma Christian and the host 'Roos while besting McMurry.

Serret took the 100 and 200 backstroke event titles with times of 1:03.50 and 2:17.20, respectively. For the Gents, Vasquez claimed the 100 backstroke (53.25) while earning runner-up honors in the 100 freestyle (49.11).

Centenary won runner-up honors in all four relays in the competition. For the Ladies in the 200 medley relay, the quartet of Serret, junior Jessi Jordan, and freshmen Kaylin Swoboda and Lindsay Strohm touched the wall in 1:58.87. In the 200 free relay, freshman Madelyn Frederick, Swoboda, Serret, and Strom touched the wall in 1:49.25.

For the Gents, Vasquez, freshman Mitchell Lulich, senior Blake Smith, and junior Eddie Dyess finished with a time of 1:41.33. In the 200 free relay, the quartet of Dyess, Smith, Lulich, and Vasquez touched the wall in 1:32.20.

Three other Ladies finished runner-up in their respective events. Freshman Sarah Harrison swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.01 while classmate Margot Frost touched the wall in 2:33.57 in the 200 butterfly. Strohm clocked in at 5:47.14 in the 500 freestyle.

Also finishing runner-up for the Gents was Smith in the 50 free with a time of 22.70.

Centenary concludes the regular season next Saturday afternoon, January 12, when it hosts Austin College. The meet begins at 1 p.m. and will be the final home competition for three Gents Swimming and Diving seniors.
