MARSHALL, Texas – On a cold windy day in east Texas, the Ladies Softball team took game one against the Red Dragons, 8-2 before Centenary (2-7) fell in game two to SUNY Oneonta (2-2), 11-3, on Monday afternoon, March 4.

Senior Wendy Gillet reached base safely in her first seven plate appearances on the day, recording four hits, drew three walks, scored two runs, and drove in two RBIs.

In game one, the Ladies put a five spot on the board in the bottom of the first with two-out lightning. With a runner on first and two down, Gillet walked and an RBI single by Erin Lewis put the Ladies in the lead. After senior Cassie Gonzalez singled to load the bases, classmate Sydney Hurley singled in a pair of runs before moving up to second on the throw home. Freshman Nichole Gauntt followed with another two-RBI single as Centenary put up a five spot in the frame.

Gillet added a two-out, RBI hit it the fourth and junior Haley Campbell drove in a pair with a two-out single in the fifth.

Freshman Hannah Scoggin (2-0) won her second complete-game win in as many appearances in the circle, allowing nine hits and two runs while striking out four in seven innings of work.

For Oneonta, Dana Del Genio went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Caroline Koch and Lauren Sabantino both added two hits and an RBI. Alyssa Bluethgen (1-1) took the loss, allowing 11 hits, eight runs, and five walks in six innings of work.

In game two, Centenary rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead, but the Red Dragons scored nine unanswered in the eight-run win. After Oneonta scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, Centenary scored single runs in the bottom of the first, second, and third. In the bottom of the first, freshman Teri Johnson struck out but reached on a passed ball. She was sacrificed to second, and a two-out single by Gillet cut the deficit in half. In the second after three walks, a bases loaded walk to Campbell tied the game.

Centenary briefly took the lead in the third when Gillet doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Gonzales' sacrifice bunt.

However, Oneonta took the lead with a five spot in the top of the fourth. With two outs and no one on base, two singles and a key error scored the tying run and put the go-ahead runner at third. Madison Capozucca followed with an RBI double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single down the leftfield line by Jade Meehan. Del Genio followed with an RBI triple and scored on a blooper over the Ladies' shortstop by Kristen Collins.

Capozucca added a three-run home run in the seventh. She finished the game with two hits, four RBIs, and a run scored. Del Gino added three hits and two runs scored. Julia Calabro (1-0) picked up the complete game win for the Red Dragons, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) in seven innings of work.

Senior Amberlee Nix (0-4) took the loss for the Ladies, allowing nine hits and seven runs in 3.2 innings of work.

Centenary returns to action Saturday, March 9, for a doubleheader with Hendrix. Game one is set for 2 p.m. in Shreveport.
