Brevard basketball helps out in the community

BREVARD, N.C. - On Saturday, Sept. 19, Brevard College's men's and women's basketball teams spent the morning taking part in a community service effort to give back. The two teams worked together to run a mini-basketball camp for the Cindy Platt Boys and Girls Club of Transylvania county, located in Brevard, North Carolina.

"It is important that our student-athletes are out supporting the kids in our community," women's basketball coach Shannon Reid explained. "We want to encourage and motivate the next generation of young people and show them the fun we can have in sport as well as the importance of pursuing dreams of higher education."

Over the course of the camp the student-athletes led groups of children ages seven and up in drills to help improve ball handling, dribbling, passing and to work on a proper shooting techniques. After all the drills the players and kids played games.

"We try and get out in the community whenever our schedule will allow it," men's basketball coach Lee Burgess said. "Our guys always get a lot out of being around the young people, and we know it means a lot to them as well. "

The mission of The Cindy Platt Boys & Girls Club is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizen. The Cindy Platt Boys & Girls Club is a positive place for kids and impacts the life of every young person it serves.
