Squeaky clean; Brevard sets program records with shutout

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Brevard College's men's soccer team played its penultimate match of the 2015 regular season on Wednesday afternoon, besting Laurel College 3-0. With the victory Brevard improves to 5-8-2 on the season, Setting the new record for most points in a season since joining the NCAA in 2008.


Earlier this year, the Tornados set the program record for best South Atlantic Conference winning percentage, currently sitting with a 4-4-2 record in league play while clinching its first conference tournament berth since the 2010 season.


Heath Turner and Jordan Alread shared the load in goal and both contributed in the Tornados fourth shutout of the season, setting an NCAA era record. Both stopped two shots in their 45 minutes as goalkeeper. Turner now has a saves percentage of .802 on the season, on pace for a NCAA era record while his 1.18 goals allowed average is also on pace for a program-best.


As a unit, the team took 27 shots, a new program record.


It did not take the royal blue and white long to get on the scoreboard, as Ryan McPhillips got the feed from Rhem Stubbs for the game-winning goal in the fifth minute. Not even three minutes later the Tornados doubled its score as a corner kick from Gabriel Garcia went to Stubbs who sent the ball into the box for a McPhillips header.


With the pair of goals, McPhillips becomes the first BC player in the NCAA era to record double digit points in multiple seasons. McPhillips recorded 13 points in his freshman year and 10 this season with four goals and two assists.


The final score of the contest came in the 21st minute, as a cross from Chris Efenecy went off the leg of Alec Goettl for the goal.


Brevard continued to put pressure on the Laurel defense throughout the match, having a balanced attack of 14 shots in the first half versus 13 in the second. Andrew Gallowitch paced the team with six shots, one on target while McPhillips had a game-high four on goals. Shawn Schoenfeld, Winston Haddock, Gabriel Garcia and Goettl all logging multiple shots on goal.


The 2015 regular season comes to an end on Saturday, Oct. 31 when they host Queens at 3:30 p.m. The game will be senior day, honoring the Tornados lone senior Gallowitch prior to the match starting.
