Wild affair sees Centenary menā??s soccer drop a 1-0 thriller to LeTourneau

SHREVEPORT, LA - It may have only been 1-0, but there was plenty of action on the pitch in men's soccer at Mayo Field Tuesday night, September 8.

Centenary College (1-2) put seven shots on target, including a penalty kick opportunity in the final minutes, but LeTourneau (2-2) booted in a first period goal and held on for the 1-0 win Tuesday night, September 8.

Sophomore Ivann Amaya was fouled in the penalty box with a little more than four minutes left for the Gents. He attempted to go right, and LeTourneau goalie Miguel Cabrera (2-0) chose the right direction and saved the shot. Senior Zachary Kidder's rebound was also pushed away by Cabrera, and the ensuing corner by the home team sailed wide of the box.

In his first start of the season, sophomore goalie Kaleb Behm (0-1) recorded four saves on five shots faced. With seconds left and Behm forward as the Gents tried to rally, LeTourneau's Hunter Swift broke away from the pack, corralled the ball, and looked as if he would score another goal. However, Behm raced back and pushed the ball past the right post as time expired to keep the goal differential at one.

The lone score of the game came in the 13th minute, when Chris Marquez scored his first goal of the season for LeTourneau. He ripped a shot into the back of the net off a pass from Mario Lopez.

LeTourneau bested Centenary in total shots, 16-7, but the Gents were able to keep the pressure on the visitors as the Maroon and White paced seven shots on target, compared to only five for the YellowJackets.

The Gents return to action Friday, September 11, when they open up Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play against Austin College at Mayo Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
