COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Gents jumped out to a 19-10 lead to open the game, but the Tigers outscored the visitors 35-16 the rest of the half as Centenary (7-5, 0-2 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) dropped its second conference game in as many days to Colorado College (6-6, 2-0 SCAC) 81-65 Sunday afternoon, January 3.
Up 9-8 three minutes in to the contest, Centenary went on a 10-2 run over the next two minutes. Junior Kendall Demouchet, who led the Gents with 18 points, hit a triple. After a defensive stand, freshman Treylan Matthews scored off of his own miss. Matthews finished the game with 10 points and a team-best four assists. Both team traded a pair of free throws before Demouchet hit a triple to bookend the run and put Centenary up 19-10 with 15:14 left in the first half.
The Gents, who made 6-for-7 from the field to begin the game, finished the first half making only their final 6-of-27 field goals to finish 12-for-34 (35.3 percent) for the half. Centenary finished 25-for-63 (39.7 percent) for the game.
Colorado College led 33-32 with 6:25 left in the half and scored 12 points, while only allowing three points, before break. James Lonergan made a layup and John Hatch a dunk after a Centenary miscue. Eric Houska followed with a layup.
Centenary Junior Brandon Campbell cut the deficit to five with a pair from the line with 3:07 left, but Lonergan quickly answered with a layup. Lonergan tallied a steal and fed Houska for the fastbreak layup. After a stop, Justin Berardino ended the Colorado College scoring in the first half with 1:58 left with a layup.
Sophomore Travion Kirkendoll split from the line to end the scoring in the first half for the Gents as the Maroon and White trailed 45-35 heading into intermission.
Lonergan made 8-for-12 from the field and 6-for-9 from the line to finish with 22 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four assists with no turnovers. Houska and Hatch both added 15 points. Colorado College made 15-for-29 (51.7 percent) to race out to a 10-point lead at break. The Tigers shot 28-for-59 (47.5 percent) for the game.
The Tigers led by as much as 19 in the second half before winning by 16.
The Gents open home conference play Friday, January 8, against Schreiner. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
