Shinohara, Mascaro to take on new coaching duties

BREVARD, N.C. - Shigeyoshi Shinohara and Juan Mascaro will take on new roles within the Brevard College soccer programs after an internal restructuring of duties this offseason.

Shinohara, who has spent the last seven seasons at the helm of Brevard's women's soccer team, will become the Tornados' new men's soccer head coach. The position became vacant this week following the departure of Bradley Morrison, who resigned to become Assistant Technical Director of the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association.

Shinohara took over the women's team in the 2009 season, Brevard's second as a member of the NCAA. Under his guidance, the team has transformed into a consistent contender for postseason berths and has enjoyed its best run in South Atlantic Conference play over the past two seasons.

Shinohara inherits a team with the tools for success in 2016 after Morrison put together an impressive lineup. In his two years as head coach, Morrison took the team to new heights, concluding with a 2015 season that set program records for most conference wins and highest overall winning percentage, saw the Tornados earn a bid to the SAC Men's Soccer Championship, and shattered every defensive record in the program's NCAA era.

"I am beyond honored to have been given this opportunity," said Shinohara. "Juan did a tremendous job of setting the foundation for the men's program when Brevard joined the NCAA, and then Morrison was able to build on it the last two years. This team is ready to take the step to the next level and I believe Kyle Kenney and I will be able to help them get there. I couldn't be happier to be a part of the team's history."

Shinohara's former coaching position with the women's soccer program will be filled by Athletic Director Juan Mascaro, who has volunteered under Shinohara after surrendering the men's program to Morrison two seasons ago.

Mascaro spent seven seasons on the men's soccer sidelines, presiding over the program's transition to full NCAA status in 2008. His coaching tenure included 23 victories, and his 2008 team still holds several NCAA-era school records.

"I am ecstatic to get back into the coaching profession," said Mascaro. "And not just to coach, but to work with a team that has the kind of potential that our women's soccer team has. I cannot wait to get started in this role."

Mascaro has a long collegiate soccer coaching history, serving as an assistant coach with the Campbell University women's soccer team prior to being hired at Brevard. He trained the goalkeepers, served as recruiting coordinator, and monitored academic success in his time with the Fighting Camels, which included a run to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament championship game in 2006.

Mascaro has also worked as an assistant men's soccer coach for the University of Central Florida, serving in Orlando for six seasons. The Golden Knights won multiple Atlantic Sun titles during his tenure and were ranked as high as No. 13 in the national polls.

Although he will be returning to the sidelines, Mascaro will continue on as Brevard's Athletic Director, a position he has held since the interim tag was removed from his title on January 1, 2012.
