Turner saves Tornados in draw with Lions

MARS HILL, N.C. - Brevard College's men's soccer team went the distance with Mars Hill on Friday night, concluding in a 0-0 tie. Brevard improves to 2-5-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in South Atlantic Conference play.

With the draw, the Tornados extend their unbeaten streak to three games. The seven league points Brevard has accumulated in the streak is the second-most conference points the royal blue and white have had in a season, having earned nine in the 2013 campaign.

The draw is also the first time Brevard has earned a SAC point when playing against Mars Hill, having never bested the Lions in league play.

The Tornados got a pair of shots on goal in the opening half, starting in the 30th minute when Ryan McPhillips took a shot that was saved by Connor Talbot. McPhillips got his own rebound off the save and tried to put another shot on target but it was blocked by a Lions' defender. With time running out in the half, Gabriel Garcia fired his first attempt but it too was stopped by the goalkeeper.

With no quality shots in the second half, Heath Turner willed the match into overtime stopping shot after shot to keep the game tied. In the 88th minute Mars Hill looked for the game-winning tally, but Turner dove and stopped the ball before it got past him.

In overtime, Brevard only got one quality shot coming from Jesse Omezi in the 102nd minute.

Turner matched his career-high in saves with 12, which he first did at Mars Hill in 2013 while setting another NCAA era record with most career shutouts with five. With 110 minutes of scoreless play, the junior lowered his goals allowed average to under 2 at 1.62.

Brevard takes a break from the rigorous conference slate as they travel to Georgia on Tuesday to take on Emmanuel, match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
