Leathers caps off 2015 with another milestone

OWENSBORO, KY. - Brevard College's men's basketball concluded the 2015 calendar year at previously-ranked Kentucky Wesleyan, falling to the host Panthers 68-60. With the loss, Brevard drops to 2-9 on the season.


In the contest, senior Miles Leathers added to his career achievements as he became just the fourth player in Brevard's NCAA-era to eclipse 1,000 career points. In his senior campaign the Charlotte, N.C. product has written his name throughout BC's NCAA-era record book, becoming the school's all-time leader in assists and steals since Brevard joined the NCAA in 2008 on top of joining the 1,000-point club. In 29 games played in the 2015 calendar year, Leathers has averaged 14.17 points, 2.72 assists and 2.13 steals.


Neither side scored in the opening 100 seconds of play, with Demarcus Threatt ending the drought with a layup to put BC up 2-0 with 18:15 left in the half. Kentucky Wesleyan (10-2) countered with a 5-0 spurt to take a 5-2 advantaged, which quickly went to a 5-5 draw following a triple from Leathers. Alex Moe and Threatt scored the ensuing two baskets, putting the royal blue and white back on top at 9-5. Tied 21-21, KWC scored four-straight to retake the advantage at 25-21 and went into halftime up 27-22.


The Tornados failed to hold an advantage in the second frame. With 16:08 remaining in the contest, Leathers made a layup off a feed from Threatt to put him past 1,000 career points. Trailing by 11 at 57-46, the Tornados scored went on a 9-2 run to make it a four point affair at 59-55. Brevard kept the margin within four until the final minute of play, where the Panthers scored the final four points of the contest.


Threatt led the team with 19 points, nine assists, two steals and a block. Leathers also finished in double digits with 11 points while leading the team with eight rebounds.


The Tornados finished the contest with a higher field goal percentage than the host, shooting 47.3 percent versus 39.7.


Brevard plays its first game of 2016 on Wednesday, Jan. 6 when they travel to Anderson with tipoff scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
