Brevard can?t recover from red card versus UNC Pembroke

Rock Hill, S.C. - A red card for Brevard in the 71st minute gave UNC Pembroke the edge needed to take control of the contest, adding two goals after the call in a 3-0 loss for BC on Sunday, Sept. 6.

The Braves (2-0) got on the scoreboard in the fourth minute of the game when Izzy Evans passed to Tom Potter who relayed it to Johannus Cuarezma for the score.

Brevard (0-2) managed to get a quality shot in the third minute as Gabriel Garcia fired one from close range but saved by the goalkeeper. Winston Haddock and Ryan McPhillips also had shots in the opening 15 minutes of play, with one being blocked by a defender and one going wide left.

Garcia got another chance at a goal in the 19th minute, but his shot was wide left. Chris Efenecy and McPhillips both put shots on target before the intermission with both stopped by Kenneth Perkinson.

The Tornados were outshot 8-6 in the first 45 minutes, but had three shots on goal versus two from the Braves.

Efenecy started the attack for BC in the second half, firing a shot on target from long distance in the 48th minute. Following the save from Perkinson, the Tornados got another chance but the header from Haddock in the 49th minute went right of the goal.

With 21 minutes left to play, Brevard picked up its first card of the season as Garcia was given a yellow card. Two minutes later, Omar Jimenez drew a red card, putting the Tornados a man down and giving Pembroke a penalty kick. Potter took the penalty kick, which Heath Turner was able to deflect but Potter got the rebound and put the ball into the goal to make it a two-goal game.

Pembroke added to its lead in the 85th minute from Branco Theis for the final goal of the contest.

Haddock, Garcia, McPhillips and Efenecy all had two shots in the loss, with Efenecy having both on target. In the goal, Turner deflected five shots including one penalty kick.

The 11 total shots by Brevard match last year's results as the most versus the Braves since the Tornados joined the NCAA ranks.

Brevard hosts Southern Wesleyan for its next contest on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 4:30 p.m.
