Rambert scores career high in loss at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Sophomore guard Fred Rambert had a breakout performance in a 90-58 defeat at the hands of Newberry on Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference action at Eleazer Arena.

Rambert, a reserve on head coach Lee Burgess's bench, set a career high with 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting, including making all four of his three-point attempts. He did not miss from the field during the second half, tripling his previous career high, and threw down a thunderous jam on a fast-break opportunity for the first dunk of his career.

"Fred was a bright spot for us on the offensive side of the ball," said Burgess. "It was a tough night for the program, but I'm proud of Fred for stepping up and making some shots."

Rambert came alive after halftime, scoring 12 points after the break and helping keep Brevard (2-13, 1-8 SAC) within a respectable margin for the majority of the game. The Wolves (10-6, 5-5 SAC) shot 53.8 percent on 39 attempts from the field over the final 20 minutes, outscoring the Tornados 60-38 during the second stanza.

The Tornados were limited to a 40.0-percent afternoon from the field but had 14 assists on their 20 made field goals. Miles Leathers set a season-high with five helpers, while Demarcus Threatt's four assists tied his second-highest mark of the season.

Leathers was held to eight points, but pulled down eight rebounds to raise his career total to 497. With three rebounds, he will become the first-ever Brevard player to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists, and 100 steals in a career.

Dhonte Ford led all scorers with 16 points, helping Newberry to 66 bench points. All three Wolves to score in double digits were reserve players. Newberry also dominated by a 42-26 count in the paint and scored 15 second-chance points while limiting the Tornados to one.

Newberry came into the game leading the nation with 20.8 forced turnovers per game. The Tornados committed 27 turnovers on the afternoon, tying for the third-highest total by a Newberry opponent this season.

The Tornados return to action on Wednesday night to face local rival Mars Hill. Tipoff from Boshamer Gymnasium is set for 8:00 p.m.
