Big second half propels No. 5 Lincoln Memorial over Brevard

HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Brevard College men's basketball team fell on the road at fifth-ranked Lincoln Memorial 88-55 on Wednesday night after the Tornados were unable to replicate their solid first-half performance after the intermission.

The Tornados (3-17, 2-12 SAC) used a 7-2 spurt over nearly two and a half minutes late in the first half to trim Lincoln Memorial's (19-2, 15-0 SAC) lead to just six points. Alex Moe's layup started the run before a Demarcus Threatt triple and a D.J. Bostick jumper in the paint made the score 31-25 with 1:14 to play.

Lincoln Memorial scored the last five points before the break, however, extending their lead to 11 points and serving notice for what was to come. By the time the teams reached the 8:27 mark of the second half, Lincoln Memorial built an insurmountable advantage on what swelled to a 45-6 run.

The outcome was reminiscent of many Brevard-Lincoln Memorial matchups over the past two seasons. In five meetings since Jan. 28, 2015, the Tornados and Railsplitters have played to within 11 points at halftime on four occasions, including one tie and one Brevard lead. But the Tornados have been outscored by at least 13 points after the break in each of those contests as Lincoln Memorial has extended its winning streak over the Tornados to 11 games.

Brevard had seven different players record at least one assist in the contest, led by a career-high three from Bostick. Demarcus Threatt led the scoring for Brevard with 14 points, while Miles Leathers chipped in 11 and finished one rebound shy of a double-double. Stevie Williams contributed 10 points to reach double figures for the third consecutive game.

Lincoln Memorial was paced by 16 points from Gerel Simmons, with the senior guard leading a group of five Railsplitters to reach double figures. Lincoln Memorial recorded its 250th all-time win inside Tex Turner Arena on the 25th anniversary of the facility's first game. The Railsplitters also set a South Atlantic Conference record with their 15th straight league victory to begin the season, breaking their own conference mark from the 2010-11 and 2014-15 seasons.

The Railsplitters came into the game with the nation's third-highest field goal percentage, shooting slightly above their season average at 55.0 percent on the evening, while Brevard shot below 50 percent for just the second time in the last five games. The hosts led Brevard 45-27 in rebounding, helping lead to a 22-7 edge in second-chance points.

Brevard will face its second top-15 team in as many games when No. 13 Queens travels to Boshamer Gymnasium for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff Saturday. The Royals, then boasting a No. 9 national ranking, defeated Brevard 90-82 on Jan. 25 in Charlotte.
