Tornados bear down in draw with Lenoir-Rhyne

BREVARD, N.C. - Brevard College's men's soccer team continued its historic season on Friday afternoon, tying with Lenoir-Rhyne 0-0. With the draw, the Tornados move to 3-7-2 overall and 3-3-2 in South Atlantic Conference action.

The tie marks the first time Brevard has earned SAC points in a match with Lenoir-Rhyne (6-5-2, 3-4-1 SAC), having lost to them in each prior conference game. Brevard now has 11 conference points, continuing to set the mark for most in a season.

Brevard's offense came out strong in the opening minutes, getting a shot attempt from Gabriel Garcia in the third minute that was deflected by a Bear's defender.

The home team wasn't able to get a shot on goal until the second half, when Gabriel Pastrana blasted a shot to the goalkeeper in the 51st minute. Brevard was able to get two more shots on target in the second half, with Caleb Hall and Garcia taking the chances. In the final minute of regulation, the royal blue and white put together one final strike to take the win with a Garcia strike that went high but stayed in play for Ryan McPhillips to take the rebound attempt going right of the goal.

Neither side got a shot on goal in overtime, with BC outshooting the Bears 3-2 in the extra 20 minutes of play.

Brevard took 20 shots in the draw, cracking the top 10 of the NCAA era book for most in a contest. It ties the 2012 installment of the Brevard versus Lenoir-Rhyne matchup in the record book.

Garcia and Patrana led the offense with five shots each, with both getting a shot on goal. Alec Goettl also logged multiple shots, getting two in the match.

Heath Turner recorded his NCAA-era record third shutout of the season, stopping two shots in 110 minutes in goal.

Brevard heads to Newberry for its next match, as the Tornados take on the Wolves on Wednesday, October 21 at 3 p.m.
