Tornados end regular season with physical overtime match

BREVARD, N.C. - Brevard College's men's soccer team concluded the regular season schedule on Saturday evening, forcing Queens to overtime in a 1-0 loss. Brevard falls to 5-9-2 overall and 4-5-2 in South Atlantic Conference play.

Prior to the match, the team honored its' lone senior Andrew Gallowitch. The senior tied the NCAA era record in the contest by making his 66th career appearance. He is only player since Brevard joined the NCAA ranks in 2008 to record a hat trick while tied for first in career goals and second in points, trailing teammate Ryan Mcphillips.

Both teams' defenses were in top shape as neither side was able to get a shot on target in the opening 20 minutes of play. Following a yellow card on a Brevard player, Queens (9-7, 7-4 SAC) drove the proceeding free kick at the goal and forced Heath Turner to stop the shot.

Gallowitch had an opportunity to play hero on his day, getting the ball and pushing it into the attacking third with only one defender to beat in the 86th minute of a scoreless bout. He took his shot from close range but it went wide of the goal. Queen got a pair of quality shots off before the end of regulation, with one shot being deflected by a defender and the other being saved by Turner.

In overtime, Brevard started with the first shot coming from Alec Goettl in the 91st minute, but it was blocked by a Royals defender. Queens countered, quickly driving the ball to the opposite side of the pitch and getting two shots in a minute span. In the 94th minute, Queens got a free kick from a Brevard foul and put the ball past the goalie to conclude the contest.

Henrique Joaquim put Brevard only shot on goal while McPhillips had a team-high two shots. Gallowitch, Gabriel Garcia and Goettl all contributed shots.

Turner stopped seven shots in over 93 minutes in goal. The Tornados defense has not allowed multiple goals in its past five matches, with a pair of clean sheets in the span.

While the regular season is over, Brevard qualified for the South Atlantic Conference Championship and will play again on Tuesday, Nov. 3. To learn more about the SAC Soccer Championship click here.
