Big Comeback Falls Short for Gents in OT against Southwestern, 91-90

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Gents rallied from a 17-point, second-half deficit to take a two point lead late, but the Pirates benefitted from 14 triples to only three for the home team as Centenary (10-9, 3-6 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Southwestern (8-11, 5-3 SCAC) at the Gold Dome Friday night, January 29.

Trailing 62-45 with 11:57 left, the Gents used a 20-3 run in nearly six minutes to tie the game. Freshman Treylan Matthews, who narrowly missed the triple-double on 18 points, 12 boards and eight assists, started the run with a jumper. He then grabbed a steal and dropped a dime to Brandon Campbell for the fastbreak hoop. Campbell finished the game with 19 points.

After a defensive stand, Sapp hit a pair from the charity stripe. Campbell grabbed a steal and Matthews found Sapp for the layup. In a little more than a minute, Centenary cut the deficit to single digits. Sapp finished the game with 18 points and 15 boards for his conference leading 10th double-double.

Southwestern's Kerry Sanders responded with a layup, but senior Justin Cueto hit a triple off a Matthews offensive rebound and kick out. After a charge by the Pirates, Campbell dialed up from long range. Southwestern then split from the line and got a defensive stand, but Matthews grabbed a steal and hit a fastbreak jumper off of Campbell's assist. Sophomore Travion Kirkendoll hit a jumper and Sapp hit a pair from the line as to tie the game at 65 with 6:08 left, only the third tie of the game and the first since 3:53 left in the first half.

The rest of regulation featured five more ties as neither team led by more than two in the final minutes.

Southwestern took an 87-82 advantage with 3:02 left in the first overtime, but Centenary responded with six unanswered in 55 seconds. Campbell made a layup before a defensive stop and junior Kendall Demouchet jumper. Demouchet led the team in points (24) steals (four) and blocks (two). A Matthews steal and a putback off his own miss quickly gave the Maroon and White the lead back with 2:07 left.

However, Southwestern's Ryan Ogden answered back with a three. Ogden finished the game with 24 points and 10 boards for the double-double. However, after six first half rebounds, he needed three boards in overtime just to accomplish that feat.

Campbell tied the game with a minute left on a pair of free throws, capping a perfect 8-for-8 night from the line, but a whistle with 1.5 left allowed Ogden to split from the line to give the visitors the win.

Zachary Whitlock paced the visitors with 20 points and 16 boards.

Southwestern got a big boost right before half, thanks to a 13-4 run in the final 3:53. Chris Lee hit a triple and a pair of free throws. Whitlock answered with a fastbreak layup off a steal. Freshman Dominique Kennedy's layup and Demouchet's jumper tried to stall the visitor's momentum, but Ogden got a layup and Sanders hit a triple. Whitlock split from the line to end the half.

Centenary returns to action Sunday against undefeated and nationally-ranked Texas Lutheran. Game time is set for noon.
