Tornados drop defensive one-goal match

BREVARD, N.C. - Brevard College's men's soccer team's historic four-match unbeaten streak came to an end on Wednesday, as the Tornados lost a physical 1-0 match to Tusculum. With the loss, Brevad drops to 3-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in South Atlantic Conference play.

Brevard's defense has not allowed multiple goals in any of its SAC matches so far. The team's 1.45 goals allowed average is on track to be the lowest since the Tornados joined the NCAA in 2008.

Gabriel Garcia was able to put pressure on Tusculum's (6-3-1) goalkeeper in the third minute of play with a shot that forced Jorge Alvarez to dive for the save. The Pioneers countered with three shots in a 90 second span, but the BC defense blocked each attempt.

After holding the efficient Tusculum offense scoreless through the first 41 minutes of play, the visitors were able to take the lead as Guillermo Lazcano found a streaking Pablo Laguna for the game-winning score. Winston Haddock tried to knot up the score before halftime with a quality attempt, but it was saved by the goalkeeper.

Andrew Gallowitch got the final shot on target for the Tornados, with his shot being saved in the 54th minute. Heath Turner did all he could to keep the home team in the contest, stopping every shot that came his way in the second half.

In the final two minutes of pay, Tusculum's Andre De Giorgi tried to put the nail in the coffin with a shot on goal, but it was saved by Turner. Brevard's offense quickly orchestrated a counter attack, setting up Alec Goettl for an attempt to force overtime, but his shot went left of the goal.

Garcia, Haddock and Henrique Joaquim all logged two shots in the contest, while Gallowitch, Goettl and Shawn Schoenfeld all attempted shots.

Brevard returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 10 when they travel to 8th-ranked Wingate on ESPN3 at 7 p.m.
