Brevard spears Trojans for second-straight conference win

BREVARD, N.C. - After surrendering the opening goal of the match, Brevard College's men's soccer team quickly responded with a goal and added another one late in the match to take a 2-1 victory over Anderson on Sept. 23 in a South Atlantic Conference match.

With the victory, BC has a winning record in SAC play for the first time since the team won the conference opener over Tusculum on Sept. 11, 2011 and second time overall. They also tied last year's conference win total of two with their second-consecutive victory; the first time the team has won back-to-back SAC matches since the 2013 season when they defeated Catawba and Anderson. The team is 2-1 in league play, 2-5 overall.

Following the header goal from Anderson's (2-3-1, 1-2 SAC) Greyson Frye off of a corner kick cross in the 58th minute, Brevard quickly retaliated forcing the ball in the box and drawing a penalty kick a minute after the score. Gabriel Garcia took the PK attempt, and sent the ball to the right side of the goal while the goalie chose left for the equalizing goal.

With a red card giving the royal blue and white the penalty kick, Brevard had 32 minutes of play with a man up. The home team finally capitalized on it when Chris Efenecy found Ryan McPhillips who delivered the game-winning goal. With the score, McPhillips has 18 career points, the most of any BC player since joining the NCAA.

Garcia took six shots in the victory, tied for the fifth-most in one game, with four on target. McPhillips also had multiple shots on goal while Omar Jimenez, Gabriel Pastrana, Winston Haddock and Jessee Omezi all took chances.

Brevard is back in action on Friday, Sept. 25 when they take on Mars Hill on the road.
