Moe records double-double in Tornados loss

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Brevard College's men's basketball finished play in the Carson-Newman Classic on Saturday evening, falling to Southern Wesleyan 85-76 despite a double-double effort from senior Alex Moe. Brevard concludes play in the classic with a 0-2 record.

Moe kicked off the contest with the opening basket of the contest, grabbing down the defensive board and taking the ball down the court. The Tornado doubled their lead a minute later on a fast break layup from Miles Leathers.

Southern Wesleyan (1-1) got on the scoreboard after being held scoreless in the opening three minutes with a jump shot, and scored five of the following seven points to take its first lead of the contest at 7-6.

Trailing by three points, Leathers picked off a Warriors' pass and got the ball to D.J. Bostick for a fast break point, and followed with a layup on his own to give Brevard the lead back at 10-9. Brevard continued the spree and created its largest lead of the half at six, 15-9. SWU countered to knot the score, and scored eight of the final 10 points of the frame to head into halftime up 30-21.

Leathers started the comeback attempt from the start of the second half, driving the ball in for a layup eight seconds into play. Sparked from the quick score, Brevard fought back and tied the score at 37-37 with 15:22 remaining in the game.

The contest turned into a back-and-forth affair, with five tied scores in the ensuing five minutes of play. Southern Wesleyan tried to break free with a five point rally to take the lead at 55-50, but Brevard was able to tie it back up at 62-62 and even managed to claim the lead at 68-66. Following the go-ahead three pointer from Moe, SWI went on a 12-0 run to create a 78-68 separation with 1:24 left.

Leathers led both sides in scoring with 24 points, going 9-15 from the field while also leading both teams in steals with four. Demarcus Threatt and Omar El Diraoui both chipped in a pair of steals, with El Diraoui contributing 13 points and eight boards.

Moe scored 18 points to go with his career-high 12 rebounds for his first double-double while wearing the royal blue and white. The senior also had two blocks and an assist in 27 minutes on the court.

Brevard finished the contest with a better shooting percentage than Southern Wesleyan, shooting 40 percent on the night versus 36.5 percent.

There is little rest for the Tornados, as the team continues its longest road swing of the season with a game at Pfeiffer on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
