Schoenfeld?s goal and assist leads Brevard to win

NEWBERRY, S.C. - After surrendering the opening goal of the contest, Brevard College's men's soccer team responded with three goals in the second half to defeat Newberry 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Brevard improves to 4-7-2, 4-3-2 in South Atlantic Conference play.

The win is the second-straight victory for the royal blue and white over Newberry (2-12, 0-9 SAC). The three goals are the most Brevard has ever scored on the Wolves since joining the NCAA in 2008.

Ryan McPhillips scored the first BC goal of the contest, getting the cross from Shawn Schoenfeld for the score. McPhillips became the first Tornado to accumulate 20 career points; he sits tied for first in the NCAA era record book for career goals with eight and in the top five for career assists with four.

Brevard continued its relentless assault on Newberry, getting the game-winning goal in the 75th minute off a Schoenfeld blast.

Shortly after Schoenfeld's goal, the Tornados got another opportunity for a score off a Newberry foul. Gabriel Garcia took the ensuing penalty kick, becoming just the fourth Brevard player to take multiple in a career, and became the third to start their career 2-2 in penalty kicks with the goal.

With four goals and two assists on the season, Garcia becomes the seventh Tornado to gain 10 points in a season since Brevard joined the NCAA in 2008. His four goals are tied for fifth in the NCAA era record book.

Brevard's defensive line only allowed two shots on goal, with Heath Turner recoding one save. The shot that got past Turner came off the foot of Newberry's Davis Bryan in the 36th minute.

All three goal scores took three shots in the victory, followed by Alec Goettl with two. Jesse Omezi, Kevin Hounshell and Chris Efenecy all took one shot with Efenecy having an assist.

Brevard is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 24 when they travel to 13th-ranked Carson-Newman; match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
