SHREVEPORT, La. - Four Gents and three Ladies garnered Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference accolades conferred by the conference at the SCAC Tournament. Junior James Sapp and sophomore Travion Kirkendoll were both named First Team All-Conference for the Gents, while senior Briana Edwards earned Third Team All-Conference recognition for the Ladies.
Junior Kendall Demouchet, the 2013-14 Newcomer of the Year, was named Third Team All-Conference for the Gents.
Freshman Treylan Matthews, who led SCAC freshmen in points, rebounds, and assists, received Honorable Mention All-Conference accolades for the Gents. For the Ladies, sophomore Samantha Lyons and freshman Jasmine Morris took home Honorable Mention All-Conference honors.
Centenary is the only men's team in the SCAC to have two First Team All-Conference performers.
Sapp finished with 15.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 12 double-doubles to lead the conference in each category. Against the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs, he surpassed former Gent Bryan Stewart for 10th in the career rebounding annals with 690. Through three seasons, Sapp is just nine points and 10 rebounds short of becoming just the ninth Gent with 1000 career points and 700 career rebounds.
If he scores nine points and grabs 310 boards in his senior campaign, he will become just the third Centenary men's basketball player with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
Kirkendoll led the conference with 19.6 points and 2.0 steals per game. He also finished fourth in the SCAC (and first among guards) with 7.6 rebounds and six double-doubles.
In conference play, Kirkendoll finished second in rebounding (behind teammate Sapp) with 8.5 boards per game. In thefinal contest of his sophomore season, he registered a career high eight assists and added 14 points and nine boards to narrowly miss a triple-double.
Freshman Matthews led all newcomers in the SCAC with 10.9 points per game. He also led all freshmen with 3.9 assists per game and was eighth in the SCAC in assist-to-turnover ratio among players averaging more than three dimes per game.
Matthews reached double digits in scoring in 16 games this season. He narrowly missed a triple double with 18 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists against Southwestern January 29. In the following game, he helped the Gents knock off then-#21 Texas Lutheran with a season-best 27 points.
Demouchet finished second in the conference in both blocks (2.4) and steals (1.7). In fact, Centenary swept the top three spots in steals per game (Kirkendoll led the league with two steals a game, Sapp tied Demouchet with 1.7 per contest). He has led or finished second in the conference in blocks and steals in his first three seasons with the Gents.
Demouchet finished the season third on the team in points per game (12.5), while finishing fourth with 4.5 boards per game. February 5 against the best shot blocker in the SCAC, Demouchet recorded a cereer-best seven blocks to just two for Austin College's Stephen Igbinosa. Demouchet broke the record for blocks in a season in program history, finishing with 65.
On the Ladies side, senior Briana Edwards finished her career with All-Conference mentions in all four seasons. She had a banner year in 2016, breaking the Centenary single-game and single-season records for blocks. Edwards ended the year with 263 points (10.1 points per game), 244 rebounds (an SCAC-leading 9.4 rebounds per game), and 82 blocked shots to easily lead the conference. She finished the season with 12 double-doubles, including the last three games of her career.
Twice on the season, Edwards blocked seven shots to break the three-decade old record of six blocks in a game. The most important may have come with her seventh block against Dallas February 7, which helped the Ladies wrap up a 54-50 win against the Crusaders. She recorded 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in the Ladies' first ever win against Southwestern January 29, 65-48.
Edwards ended her Centenary career with 956 points, 964 rebounds, and 208 blocks. She holds the Centenary career record in both rebounds and blocks, ranking sixth in career points. Ranking fourth in the SCAC all time in blocks and rebounds, Edwards becomes just the second player in conference history with at least 900 points, 900 rebounds, and 200 blocked shots for a career.
Wrapping up the Honorable Mention All-Conference honorees for the Ladies include sophomore Samantha Lyons and freshman Jasmine Morris. Morris burst onto the scene with 21 points in an 84-60, season-opening win at Dallas Christian November 13, 2015. She grabbed the initial SCAC Player of the Week honors November 16. Morris finished second in the conference with 14.8 points per game.
Morris' 385 points for the season was the most for a Centenary freshman in 32 years and the second-most all time.
Lyons was named All-Conference after leading the team and finishing eighth in the conference in three-point shooting percentage (36.0). She had a career game in the Ladies' win against Southwestern, scoring 28 points (including a 6-for-8 mark from downtown) and grabbing eight boards. She finished the season with 250 points (9.6 per game).
The Gents wrapped up the season with a hard-fought win against Trinity in the 2016 SCAC Tournament quarterfinals, 57-55, before losing in the semifinals to eventual champion Texas Lutheran. The Ladies fell in the quarterfinals to Schreiner, 78-65. Schreiner took home tournament runner-up honors.
