Tornados continue success versus Catawba in shutout victory

MARS HILL, N.C. - Brevard College's men's soccer team continued its program-best unbeaten streak on Sunday evening, defeating Catawba 2-0 in a South Atlantic Conference match. With the win, Brevard improves to 3-5-1 overall and 3-1-1 in conference action.

The win is the third-straight that Brevard has over the Indians, scoring two goals in each match. It is the first time Brevard has shutout Catawba (4-5, 2-3 SAC) since joining the conference in 2008.

Andrew Gallowitch scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute, as he pushed the ball into the attacking third and blasting the shot from the right corner. With the tally, Gallowitch has eight career goals, putting him ahead of teammate Ryan McPhillips atop the NCAA era record book for most in a career.

Brevard continued the offensive tempo following the goal, forcing a yellow card from Catawba in the 70th minute. On the free kick from the yellow card, Gabriel Garcia sent the ball into the box, where fellow freshman Henrique Joaquim headed the ball into the goal to but the Tornados up 2-0. Catawba tried to get back in the match, but couldn't get a shot on goal for the remainder of the match.

Garcia paced the offense with four total shots, while he and Gallowitch both had two shots on target. Joaquim and Winston Haddock both logged shots on goal while Omar Jimenez, Chris Efenecy and Shawn Shoenfeld all took shots.

Heath Turner had his second-straight shutout in goal en route to the win. Over the past two games, both played at Mars Hill, Turner has accumulated 19 saves with no goals allowed. In the 2015 campaign, the junior currently has a .756 save percentage and allowing 1.41 goals a match, both on pace to be program records for an individual season.

With a 3-1-1 record in league play, the royal blue and white have secured that they will finish the 2015 season with the best SAC record in program history. The 10 points earned is a program record.

The Tornados are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 7 when they host Tusculum in a league match at 4:00 p.m.
