Gents Cannot Climb Out of Early Hole against Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Gents allowed the first 10 points of the game and could not climb out of an early hole as Centenary (10-7, 3-4 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament) fell at Southwestern (7-10, 4-2 SCAC) 90-74 Friday night, January 22.

After the initial push by the home team, and a deficit as large as 19 in the first half, Centenary could not climb within seven in the second half. Down 66-50 with 10 minutes left in the game, junior James Sapp hit a jumper and then a pair of free throws. Ryan Ogden hit a jumper for the home team, but junior Brandon Campbell countered with a triple. Sophomore Travion Kirkendoll and junior Kendall Demouchet hit back-to-back layups, but the home team countered with five straight.

Demouchet led the way for the Gents with a season high 20 points, while Sapp added 19 points and seven rebounds, including hitting all eight free throws.

Southwestern held the Gents at bay, shooting a blazing 60.7 percent from the field in the second half and 53.3 percent (32-for-60) from the game. Chris Molina paced Southwestern with 20 points off the bench as the Pirates scored 29 from their reserves while holding the Maroon and White scoreless.

Southwestern held Centenary scoreless the first 3:25 of the game in scoring the first 10 points. Karry Sanders hit a three eight seconds into the contest and Chris Molina added a fastbreak hoop off a steal. Molina hit a triple and Zachary Whitlock added a layup before Kirkendoll opened the Gents scoring with his own layup.

Centenary return s to action Saturday at #23 Texas Lutheran. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
